Fall 2014 Faculty Update: Professor John Cort

John E. Cort, professor of religion, is co-chair of the Jain Studies Group of the American Academy of Religion. At the 2014 annual meetings of the AAR in San Diego in November, he chaired a session, titled “Modes and Meanings of Temple Patronage in Jain Traditions;” and presented a paper titled “Jain Studies: Advantages and Disadvantages to a Tradition-Based Approach” at a roundtable co-sponsored by the Jain Studies Group entitled “Region or Tradition in the Study of South Asian religions?”

Cort also delivered a keynote lecture titled “Material Culture as a Resource for the Study of Religion” at a summer school workshop graduate academy at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen on “Religion as Resource: Local and Global Discourses,” in July 2014. He also co-chaired and responded to a session titled “The Sacred as (Re)source: Places, Divinities and Saints.”
