Quest Awards

The Denison Queer Studies Program announces the Quest Awards, a new writing award that recognizes outstanding student writing in the discipline of Queer Studies. The awards are sponsored by John Tindale, Denison Alumnus ’72, a former English major.

Quest Awards ($175-200 each) will be offered in each of the following four categories:

Senior Research Awards: his category is open to queer studies-related senior research projects completed in the current academic year. For full consideration submissions must, through writing, substantively enhance the field of Queer Studies. Projects should emerge from one or more of the following courses:

  • Queer Studies Senior Seminar (QS-400)
  • Queer Studies senior directed study (QS-361, 362)
  • Queer Studies senior research (QS-451/452)
  • Any queer studies-related senior seminar, senior directed study, and senior research projects regardless of the program/department designation

Junior and Senior Writing Awards: This category is open to all critical and/or scholarly papers written on Queer Studies topics by junior and senior students during the current academic year that are submitted to complete credit-earning coursework at Denison, regardless of the program/department designation. For full consideration submissions must contain substantive queer-related work that enhances the discipline of Queer Studies. Senior seminar, senior directed study, senior research, and creative writing submissions will not be considered in this category.

First Year and Sophomore Writing Awards: This category is open to critical and/or scholarly papers written on Queer Studies topics by first year and sophomore students during the current academic year that are submitted to complete credit-earning coursework at Denison, regardless of the program/department designation. For full consideration submissions must contain substantive queer-related work that enhances the discipline of Queer Studies. Creative writing submissions will not be considered in this category.

Creative Writing Awards:This category is open to submissions in all genres of creative writing on Queer Studies topics written during the current academic year that are submitted to complete credit-earning coursework at Denison, regardless of the program/department designation. Entries of various lengths and various genres will be considered. For full consideration submissions must contain substantive queer-related work that enhances the discipline of Queer Studies. The two subcategories of this award will be Junior/Senior Award and First Year/Sophomore Award.


Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be evaluated based on quality of writing, including one or more of the following criteria:

  • Achievement of the writing goals articulated in the course prompt.
  • Use of gender, sexuality, or queerness as a lens for analysis.
  • Contribution to the development of an inclusive queer theory.
  • Development of queer insight based on personal experience.
  • Enhancement of the discipline of Queer Studies.

Eligibility/Submission Criteria

All Denison students are eligible to submit entries.

  • All Denison students are eligible to submit entries.
  • Students may enter multiple categories.
  • Students who wish to enter more than one category must submit their various materials separately for each category.
  • Students must limit their entries to one paper per category. Entries should be no longer than 15 pages.

Formatting of Submissions

  • All identification markers must be removed from all pages, including name, course info, date, etc.
  • Slayter Box number should be provided in place of your name.
