Dr. Jill Morawski (Wesleyan University) will present “Reflexivity in Psychology: Reconsidering Milgram’s Obedience Studies” on Monday, November 17, 2014 in the Burton-Morgan Lecture Hall.

Stanley Milgram’s experiments demonstrating the conditions under which individuals yield to authority anchor psychology’s conception of obedience and inform explanations of everyday acts of obeying. Despite such continued recognition, most scientific, textbook, and popular accounts of the experiments rarely address disobedience - the ways some participants acted otherwise. A reanalysis of data in Milgram’s archive that closely attends to experimenter-participant relations reveals participants’ less-than-obedient behaviors. These data indicate how the unexamined messiness of experimentation can be transformed into discrete facts that ignore important features of human action.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Psychology. It is free and open to the public.
