Dr. Jenny SaffranDr. Jenny Saffran is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her lab at the Waisman Center tests hundreds of babies a year in experiments designed to tap infants’ language learning abilities. Professor Saffran has received numerous awards for her research, including early career awards from the American Psychological association and the International Society for Infant Studies.

Long before infants produce their first word, they have learned a tremendous amount about their native language(s). What do infants know, and how did they learn it? Ground-breaking research is fundamentally changing how we understand early language development. Evidence will be presented indicating that infants learn language by tracking its statistical properties. Implications for atypical language development will also be considered.
