Organizational Studies Summer Session 2018
Dr. David P.J. Przybyla led 15 students on the 2018 Organizational Studies Summer Session, May 14th to June 10th. The summer is part of the Organizational Studies program at Denison. The session is an intense, challenging, and fun four-week program. Students experience organizational structure and leadership style from experts. Learning occurs through workshops, hands-on exercises, guided debates, simulations, and travel. More than 70 professionals, many Denison graduates and parents working in business settings across the country, facilitate the daily sessions.
Topics include finance and investment, organizational change and development, marketing, public relations, leadership and communication in organizations, organizational ethics, e-commerce, and the role of personal values in career development.
Students travel to various cities to meet on-site with experts in their fields. This year, students traveled to New York City and San Francisco for meetings with Denison alumni and friends in for-profit and nonprofit settings. In past years, students have traveled to other cities like Boston, Chicago, and London.
During the session, students also work as consultants for actual clients. The clients present the students with real-world challenges facing contemporary organizations. Student teams are asked to consider the issues facing their clients, formulate multiple solutions, develop project books, and prepare formal presentations. In the process, team members develop their skills in negotiation, leadership, and teamwork, and come to appreciate the role of individuals and teams in effective organizational functioning.
The summer session is offered annually, immediately after Spring semester.
