Short-term & Summer
Great Deal of Flexibility
The opportunity to study off-campus in January, May or over the summer is a great option for students who have limited time to pursue this opportunity during the academic year. There is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to short-term and summer programs. Denison encourages students to explore short-term and summer programs offered by the program providers that we partner with for semester study options (see below). Information concerning dates, costs and eligibility (GPA, prerequisites, etc.) is noted on the program websites.
- Advanced Studies in England
Based in the world heritage city of Bath, ASE’s five-week, 8-credit summer program offers core courses for students in English, History and Theater. Elective courses in other disciplines vary from year to year.
- Alliance for Global Education
Alliance offers students the opportunity to pursue Chinese language study in Beijing or Shanghai. Alliance also offers a field-based learning program in Pune, India focusing on international development and South Asian studies. Programs offer 6 to 9 credits and range from 7 to 8 weeks in length.
- Arcadia College of Global Studies
Arcadia offers 40 summer programs across a range of disciplines that can be mixed and matched to create a summer experience that meets the individual needs of students. Students in the sciences may wish to participate in a STEM research program in England, Ireland or Scotland. Arcadia also offers a number of academic internships which are located in Australia, England, Ireland, Italy, and Scotland.
- Center for Ecological Living and Learning
CELL offers two Maymester programs that allow students to explore the concept of “Sustainability Through Community.” The programs are located in Iceland and Scotland.
- CIEE Study Abroad
CIEE offers 112 summer programs that offer a range of experiences and coursework to meet the specific needs of students. Most programs offer several sessions allowing students to mix and match programs or to select from program dates that best accommodate their schedules.
- DIS – Study Abroad in Scandinavia
DIS offers multiple 3-4 week sessions that allow students to study in Copenhagen anywhere from three to ten weeks. Students enroll in one course per session. Study travel is included in Sessions 2 and 3.
- Heidelberg Summer Program in German and European Studies
This 6-week program offers students 6 credits of German language, plus a 3-credit seminar focusing on German and European culture, economics and politics. Program is able to accommodate both beginner and advanced level German language students.
- IAU College
IAU offers a number of January term programs in Europe and Morocco, as well as summer study opportunities in Aix-en-Provence, France and Barcelona, Spain. The 6-week Marchutz School of Fine Arts program offers students the opportunity to enroll in painting and drawing classes as well as an art criticism seminar for a total of 6-7 credits.
- IES Abroad
IES offers 47 summer programs in a broad range of academic disciplines, including academic internships abroad and in the U.S.
- National Theater Institute’s Theatermakers Summer Intensive
This 6-week intensive program offers actors, directors and playwrights training and the opportunity to produce new works alongside NTI professionals.
- The Philadelphia Center
This intensive 8-week internship program offers students the opportunity to pursue a 32- to 36-hour/week internship combined with a seminar that focuses on entering professional life and negotiating workplace relations. With more than 900 placements in the city, TPC is able to accommodate students from most academic disciplines.
- SEA Semester
SEA offers environmental studies programs in the Atlantic and the Pacific that explore ocean-related themes using a cross-disciplinary approach.
- School for Field Studies
SFS offers biology and environmental studies majors or minors the opportunity to conduct research in a field-based learning environment. Programs are offered in Australia/New Zealand, Bhutan, Costa Rica, Panama, Tanzania and the Turks & Caicos. Some locations offer multiple sessions.
- School for International Training
SIT offers 19 summer experiential learning programs that grapple with complex and critical issues, such as, global health, sustainable development, biodiversity, human rights, migration and peace building. Programs range in length from 4 to 7 weeks and 4-9 credits.
- Sweet Briar College
Sweet Briar offers French majors or minors the opportunity to study French language and culture. During this 4-week program participants live with French families and take a minimum of 6 credits. Applicants must be through French 215.
