Alumni & Careers
The Narrative Journalism program is a recent development at Denison, yet its young alumni are already out in the world, practicing their craft. Here is a sample of what Narrative Journalism alumni are up to.
Shanti Basu ’20
Shanti Basu was a 2020 recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award at Denison. She is currently working remotely as a Social Media Coordinator for XX Artists, a digital-first marketing & advertising agency, while also freelancing in copywriting, creative direction and design. Shanti loved supporting the harm reduction community and creating community engagement through art while in Ohio! Her interests include photojournalism and graphic design.
Hannah Kubbins ’17
Hannah Kubbins worked as a research intern for Ohioans to Stop Executions (OTSE) during her senior year and now serves as the organization’s Executive Director. Kubbins hopes to lead OTSE and its partner organizations to rid Ohio of its death penalty in the next few years. She lives in Columbus, OH.
Alina Panek ’20
Alina Panek lives two lives after graduation. During the day, she is the Project Coordinator for Report for America, fighting for local news. In this role, she coordinates the mentorship program, helps select new Corps Members, and searches for best stories written by RFA corps members. Throughout the night (some shifts are literally 1am to 9am), she is the Assignment Editor for CBS 2 Chicago. An AE is to the news, as a dispatcher is to ambulances. Alina finds breaking news tips, researches, and most recently, gathers election data and potential stories. She says she’s “grateful for the Narrative Journalism program for teaching me the importance of local news and a journalist’s powerful tool for ethical storytelling, empathy.”
Chloe Sferra ’20
Chloe is currently fulfilling a Fulbright scholarship as an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea. She teaches at the elementary school level and explores the country in her free time as part of her role as a cultural ambassador. While at Denison, Chloe earned several awards for her writing, including the McCann Prize of Excellency in English at Denison University (2018, 2019). Chloe continues to write while abroad and is thankful for the Narrative Journalism department for helping her develop and grow.
Nora Zacharski ’19
Nora Zacharski was an Environmental Studies Fellow at Denison and completed two senior capstone projects — drafting a solar zoning code for the Village of Granville, and writing a three-part longform story about America’s rural drinking water crisis within the context of Ohio. Nora currently works as a Public Affairs Coordinator for the American Wind Energy Association, based in Washington DC. In this role, she works on state-based campaigns, which advocate for wind energy at a local level across the country. She also provides support for their digital and social media campaigns, and helps with special projects, such as their annual American Wind Week event, by writing blog posts and content as needed.
Logan Agin ’20
One of Logan’s passions has always been to tell stories about the intersection of sports (particularly soccer) and society. With sports being on hold during the pandemic, she decided to start a podcast about American soccer. Since then, she moved from Columbus to Louisville to work with Racing Louisville FC, the newest professional women’s soccer team. In her role as Communications Coordinator, she is in charge of helping create content online and social media around the team. She also is responsible for helping both local and national journalists cover the team and grow their exposure.
