A large crowd from Denison and the local community turned out for the Denison Film Society screening of the Oscar-nominated movie Hidden Figures. This event as spearheaded by Dr. May Mei in collaboration with Dr. Toni King of Black Studies, Dr. Gill Miller of Dance and Women and Gender Studies, and Dr. Lauren Araiza of History and Black Studies. After the viewing, Drs. Mei, King, Miller, and Araiza held a question and answer session regarding the movie and its many messages. The panel began with each faculty member giving her own personal reaction to the film and how it related to her life and academic perspective. As a follow-up to this event, Dr. Mei has invited Dr. Duchess Harris from Macalester College who is a Professor of American Studies, as well as the granddaughter of a NASA mathematician and an author of a young adult book entitled “Hidden Human Computers: The Black Women of NASA,” to visit in Fall of 2017.
