In the spring semester, the Math and Education departments hosted visitor Anne Maclean, the founder of the Maths and Science Leadership Academy of Kimberley, South Africa, along with her two colleagues, Martie Venter, MSLA Academic Coordinator and Mandisa Lebitso, MSLA Maths Pi-oneers Programme Director & Northern Cape Department of Education Grade 10-12 Mathematics Coordinator – Frances Baard District.
Anne Maclean and her colleagues spent the week at Denison visiting classes and engaging with faculty and the community. They participated in a workshop for K-12 educators at the Works, had working breakfasts with high school teachers in both Newark and Granville, and Anne Maclean gave a public talk on April 13 titled: “From Impoverishment to Empowerment – Growing Future Leaders of Calibre: the Maths & Science Leadership Academy in South Africa Shares its Story.”
The visit ended with a “Think Tank” in the Center for Learning and Teaching. Interested students and faculty gathered to revisit issues from the week's discussion and plan future cooperation. We are excited about future partnerships with MSLA!
