The hatchet planimeter is an antique device shaped essentially like a miniature axe and including no moving parts which was used to measure areas of plane regions, particularly those whose boundary equations were not explicitly known, as in the field of cartography. The mathematics underlying this device is surprisingly rich; we'll investigate it from several perspectives, from vector calculus to hyperbolic geometry.
