Faculty Hannah Muller comments on 'Downton Abbey'
In Downton Abbey’s first season, the show was set in 1912, in the English country house Downton Abbey. In the fifth season, the family will be dealing with the changes of the early 1920s. Hannah Muller, an assistant professor of history at Denison University focuses on the British Empire, and she was initially drawn to the show by the diverse cast of characters.
In an article for the Lancaster Eagle Gazette Muller was quoted as saying “I would say it was definitely the character development, the focus on family dynamics and how family is being defined in the show,” she said. “It’s a quite different definition of family than we think of in a contemporary, American context. Their family includes members of the house itself and their servants. It’s a world in which ‘the family’ means everyone who is mutually taking care of each other.”
