The Protestant Reformation Turns 500

Faculty

500th anniversary celebrations of the Protestant Reformation are largely focused on the looming figure of Martin Luther, his personality, and his individual impact on global history and Christianity. Writing in OSU’s “Origins,” Karen Spierling discusses why celebrating Martin Luther, the man, is insufficient to understand the historical impact of the Reformation as a movement. Instead, she explains, a complex web of factors, including new print technology, political turmoil in central Europe, the beginning of globalization, and a willing audience interested in issues such as the role of women in society all came together to produce a religious, social, political, and economic movement that continues to influence the world today.
