National Educational Conference Held at Denison

Conferences & Symposia

In June, from the 21st to the 24th, Denison will host a number of educational leaders from across the country for the National Educational Conference, supported by the Margaret A, Cargill Foundation Endowed Fund for Education.

Denison Professor Karen Graves is lead coordinator for the conference. She notes, “Faculty at Denison conceived the idea of this conference after many rich conversations with colleagues across the nation—catching up at research conferences, considering options for licensing, during program reviews and policy strategy sessions.”

She adds, “I think of this conference as planting a flag, staking our claim for teacher preparation grounded in the liberal arts, the value of educational studies in the academy, and the critical necessity of this work in our particular historical moment. Rather than simply wait for others to lead—from state or federal departments of education, foundations, or other outfits posing alternative school policies, we realized we should just do this work.”

Of special note, we are inviting the public to attend three events:

  1. Keynote Address by Bruce Kimball, The Ohio State University, “Liberal and Professional Dimensions of Educational Studies,” Burton Morgan Lecture Hall, room 115, 1:30 p.m., Friday, 22 June.
  2. Keynote Address by Mira Debs, Yale University, “Education Studies is not teacher prep (and that’s actually a good thing): Straddling the vocational-theoretical divide,” Burton Morgan Lecture Hall, room 115, 1:30 p.m., Saturday, 23 June.
  3. Music by BeJae Fleming with Jackie Blount, Knobel Hall, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, 23 June.
