Spencer Brooks, Co-founder of GG Games will present “How Data Scientists are Keeping us on the Toilet” a Little Longer while we match 3, build armies, and solve puzzles on Thursday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Olin 114.

You can’t spreadsheet fun, but that doesn’t stop the game industry from trying. Everyday data scientists are trying to measure, optimize, and “juice” the fun by analyzing massive amounts of data to keep you in the game longer. What started with simple spreadsheets is quickly turning into Skynet. These hyper-optimizations make us spend more money, and keep us tapping on the toilet a bit longer.

In this talk, we will explore:

  • Core loop design concepts.
  • Measuring fun.
  • The advancements in game optimizations.
  • How over-optimization has led to an unhealthy game industry.
  • The Flappy Bird effect.

This lecture is sponsored by the Ronneberg Lecture Series and the Department of Math and Computer Science.
