Dr. Havill discusses his textbook at SIGSCE

Faculty

Professor of Computer Science Jessen Havill recently presented in a special session entitled CS 1: Beyond Programming at the annual ACM SIGCSE (Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education) technical symposium in Seattle. The special session focused on introductory computer science courses that broaden their focus beyond programming by emphasizing the fundamental ideas and importance of computing in a broader context. This was an ideal setting for Dr. Havill to discuss his textbook Discovering Computer Science which focuses on real world problems that can be solved through the algorithmic process and problem-solving techniques central to computer science. This text is used for all of Denison’s introductory computer science courses in a variety of contexts including digital media and games, scientific data and dynamics, and markets, polls, and social networks. We are excited to have Dr. Havill share his great work with the larger community.
