Professors Tom Bressoud, Matt Kretchmar, and David White spent July in Utah as part of the Undergraduate Faculty Program of the Park City Mathematics Institute. The group wrote “Curricular Guidelines for Undergraduate Programs in Data Science,” to be published by the Annual Review of Statistics. As part of its work, the group laid out the guiding principles of data science, the key competencies of a data science major, and a list of core content any data science major should contain. The group crafted several new courses in mathematics and computer science, designed to focus on real world modeling, data analysis, data acquisition, data cleaning, data curation, and computation with (big) data. The group is excited to bring what they learned back to Denison, to improve the mathematics, computer science, and data analytics majors.
