The discussion of Cleopatra draws on the source material from antiquity, including Cleopatra's own writings, to reconstruct her life while also engaging with the cultural and historical background of Egypt in its Greco-Roman context.

Dr. Roller is a leading expert in ancient North Africa and the Middle East. His publications include Cleopatra: A Biography (Oxford University Press)–the first comprehensive biography of Cleopatra based almost on contemporary sources–,The Building Program of Herod the Great (University of California Press), and Ancient Geography: The Discovery of the World in Classical Greece and Rome (Bloomsbury Press). He is also the translator of numerous important works by geographers from antiquity.
