HOIST - Cinema Installation with Visiting Artist Liz Roberts
Hoist builds upon Roberts’ own installation, Lift, which featured two suspended 10ft x 6ft rear projection screens showing synchronized and looped HD video footage of a freight elevator in a defunct department store. In collaboration with Wiskemann’s class, Roberts has spent the past month working with the students to plan and build a similar installation in the Mulberry Gallery. Featuring an interactive elevator panel, two rear projection screens, and cinema vignettes shot by each student, the installation places moving images into a physical space. Less simulacra, more mise-en-abyme (“placed into abyss ”), Hoist is both a dream within a dream – as mise-en-abyme is used in film – and a frame story, leading the viewer from one story to the many stories contained and framed within.
Join the Department of Cinema for the opening reception of Hoist on Thursday, December 3 from 5:30pm-7: 30pm . The event is free and open to the public.
Hoist will be on view in the Mulberry Gallery from December 3 through December 7.
