Experimental filmmaker Vincent Grenier is a native of Quebec City, Canada, and currently lives in Ithaca, New York and teaches in the Film Department at nearby Binghamton University. Over the past four decades he has produced one of the most significant bodies of experimental films and videos of his generation.

He writes, “My works directly confront the ideas of spatiality and temporality as a continuum and unsettle the notion of a universal human experience. Instead, these films and videos move towards fracturing space and time in order to reveal how the everyday and the specific hold within them ineffable, untranslatable revelations of light, color, form, and composition.”

Grenier’s work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Film Festival, the Whitney Museum, the Rotterdam Film Festival, and the Media City Film and Video Festival in Ontario. His films are included in the Donnell Library, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and at other institutions in Canada and the U.S.

At Denison, Grenier will show recent work on digital video. While many experimental filmmakers of his generation, steeped in analog (16mm) filmmaking, have resisted digital, Grenier has embraced it. His work is preoccupied with digital’s unique properties, those qualities of image and sound that distinguish it from film. He is especially interested in the possibilities digital offers for post-production image manipulation, a process at which he has become a master. But far from formal exercises, his videos are strikingly beautiful and poetic, by turns humorous and poignant. He writes that his work “is fascinated by contingencies: digressive moments, unbalanced spaces, asymmetrical compositions, revealing details, incongruous recordings, and unexpected linkages between form and meaning.”

Grenier’s screening will be in the Department of Cinema on Thursday, October 30, at 8:00pm. The event is free and open to the public. For samples of Grenier’s work, visit his website.
