Dr. Rachel Mitton-Fry attended the 2017 Rustbelt RNA Meeting (RRM) with lab members Edric Choi ’18 and Yow Yong Tan ’19. The RRM is an annual regional meeting of the RNA Society, with over 300 participants, primarily graduate students, post docs, and professors from large research universities in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. The 2017 RRM was held on October 13 –14 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Edric Choi was awarded the Excellent Undergraduate Poster Presentation Award (the 2nd place award for an undergraduate poster) for his presentation of “Analyzing the role of GU base pairs on the melting behavior of the S. enterica htrA RNA thermometer.”
Yow Yong Tan also presented a poster “Investigating the importance of the bulge region for S. enterica htrA RNA thermometer behavior using SHAPE assays.” Both posters were based on summer 2017 research in the Mitton-Fry lab.
Also in attendance was former Mitton-Fry lab member Janie Frandsen ’14. Janie is currently a graduate student in biochemistry in the lab of Dr. Tina Henkin at The Ohio State University.
