The Omega Workshops and Early-Twentieth Century Adverts

Faculty

In October 2016, Dr. Clark published “Potted Histories: The Omega Workshops Adverts Campaign in The Burlington Magazine” as part of The Burlington Magazine Index Blog.

That Roger Fry, the founder of the Omega Workshops (1913-1919), editor of The Burlington Magazine, and respected art theorist, rarely advertised the Omega's decorative art-objects (ceramics, textiles, and furniture) has become an accepted art-historical fact. But Dr. Clark's research has shown that, when Fry did advertise, he tended to use examples of Omega pottery. Her post contends that Fry used the Omega's pottery—a medium in which he excelled—to signify his opposition to mass-manufactured, mass-marketed ‘opifacts’ (commodities).

Dr. Clark's post may be read on The Burlington Magazine Index Blog
