Open U Shape between leaf lobes. Twigs always end in buds. Thin bark.

Pin oaks are a popular ornamental tree in the United States, because they are fairly easy to transplant (Wikipedia).  Name may be in reference to the branches, which contain short, spur-like twigs (Braun 1961).
