The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Eric Liebl presenting “Stop Eating and Go Take a Walk!”
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Eric Liebl presenting “Stop Eating and Go Take a Walk!” Liebl's lab uses genetic tools to study how the fruit fly central nervous system organizes itself during early development. Unexpectedly, they have uncovered a genetic interaction that alters the behavior of fly larva (caterpillars). At about four days into development normal fly larva switch from a focus on eating (called the forager stage) to being un- interested in eating and focused on crawling around in preparation to form a pupae (cocoon) (called the wanderer stage). The mutant animals remain foragers. So if you find yourself constantly interested in eating and not especially interested in moving around or exercising, this talk may be of interest.

Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Jack Shuler presenting “The Woman Who (May Have) Stopped the Death Penalty.” The current shortage of lethal injection drugs in the US can be traced, in part, to the work of Reprieve International researcher Maya Foa. Foa's has helped many pharmaceutical companies block the sale of their drugs to death penalty states—including Ohio. But have there been unintended consequences because of her work such as recent botched executions? Or are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the death penalty in the US?

Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Steven Olmschenk presenting “Quantum Information with Atoms and Light.” Rapid advances in information technology have revolutionized the way we go about our daily lives. However, the way this technology stores and processes information is still based on classical physics. Utilizing the features of quantum physics may allow for information processors that could eclipse the power of any conventional computer, and yield insight into the unintuitive theory of quantum physics. After a broad overview, Olmschenk will highlight the effort at Denison University to use laser-cooled, single atomic ions and light to store, process, and transfer quantum information.

Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Karen Graves presenting “Pivotal in His Absence: Lewis Powell’s Influence on the Legal Status of Lesbian and Gay Teachers.” Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. issued a number of critical educational policy decisions regarding affirmative action, desegregation, school funding, and gay rights. In this paper Graves explores two cases taken up by the Court in subsequent years: Board of Education v. National Gay Task Force (1985) and Bowers v. Hardwick (1986).

The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting “Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.”
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting “Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.” In Toni Morrison’s novel “A Mercy,” set in New England in 1690, Florens, a 16-year-old African-American woman, is on a journey to summon the blacksmith to save the life of her Mistress; the blacksmith is a free black man, a healer, and Florens’ lover. The small group of people with whom Florens lives, a multicultural, women-centered, somewhat egalitarian group becomes, for a short time, a family. The blacksmith and Florens reveal the role of African people in the construction of whiteness and Americanness as well as connections between economics, gender, sexuality, law, and religion in emerging constructions of blackness. Through Florens’ quest and the dissolution of the family group, Morrison signals both the failures and the possibilities revealed by revised understandings of American history.

This presentation showcases the biology of local ponds by sharing research experiences and data collected by Denison students and Dr. Rettig. We will learn about the biology of organisms like sunfish, aquatic insects, zooplankton, and water weeds, and consider the population and community ecology of Denison’s Ebaugh Pond and other local ponds.
