    Full Description: Denison celebrates the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a lecture by James Loewen, "Lies My Teacher Told Me- About Race," part of a day of observance and events. Loewen is a sociologist who spent two years at the Smithsonian surveying twelve leading high school textbooks of American history only to find an embarrassing blend of bland optimism, blind nationalism, and plain misinformation. The best-selling author wrote “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong” and “Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong.”

The Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE) is a poverty simulation that immerses participants into the experiences of individuals and families living in poverty. Through role play you will be challenged with real life scenarios that people living in poverty must navigate everyday. COPE will challenge, inform and focus your understanding of poverty and inspire you to act in new ways to help end poverty in our community.
