Recognition Features: 

Bark is shaggy; pinnately compound leaves, usually with five leaflets, the ending 3 leaflets are usually larger than the base 2. Its shaggy bark distinguishes it from other hickories, only shellbark hickory has a similar feature; but even then, it is not as pronounced (Braun 1961).
