The Laura C. Harris Series welcomes Patrisse Khan-Cullors, presenting a theatrical production titled “POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied” as part of Denison’s Martin Luther King Day Celebration.

Produced and directed by Kahn-Cullors, the piece will be created by Denison students during first semester and presented as part of Denison’s annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration. This is the fourth installation of the piece. It has been produced in Kalamazoo, Mich.,Los Angeles and Seattle.

Kahn-Cullors is an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter living and working in Los Angeles. Internationally known as the co-founder of Black Lives Matter, she is the founder and a board member of the Los Angeles based organization Dignity and Power Now, and the director for truth and reinvestment at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. She is active in many other social justice organizations, including Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity.

This event is co-sponsored by Denison University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Office of the Provost. The event is also a part of the 2016-2017 Laura C. Harris Series. The year-long symposium will host speakers and artists to discuss the theme “Making Just Democracies?” which seeks an emergence of dialogue and action that work toward democratizing subjects and objects – natures and cultures – into a collective embrace.
