The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Eric Liebl, professor of biology, and Rachel Mitton-Fry, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, present “A short history of DNA editing.”

In the 1970s, scientists learned how to move blocks of DNA around, leading to the “recombinant DNA” revolution that brought us Humulin (insulin produced in bacteria), Roundup Ready crops (plants engineered to resist herbicide) and the AquaAdvantage salmon (engineered for fast growth). Discoveries from the early 2010s have now shown us how to actually edit DNA; to reach in and make specific changes to specific sequences. Buckle up, as it’s going to be quite a ride.
