The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Harry Heft presenting “Public Spaces and the Life of Communities: Reflections on the Design of the Denison Campus.” The social significance of spaces in the public realm, mostly notably, “the spaces between buildings,” has tended to be neglected in the design fields for over a century. It was once well understood that the “the spaces between buildings” are where civic life takes root and possibilities for unplanned, meaningful social relationships reside. Over the past 30 years designers and planners have slowly rediscovered the significance of creating the kinds of public spaces that cultivate social exchange. How does the Denison campus measure up in this regard? Has the undeniably ‘picturesque’ character of our campus led us to overlook the need for design features that contribute to the development of a rich living community?
