The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Hanada Al-Masri presenting “Jordanian Editorial Cartoons: An Insider’s Perspective Into Jordanian Culture.” Editorial cartoons have struck a nerve in popular culture. They represent a rich source of social entertainment and criticism, they are available to a wide readership, and they have a wide circulation through daily newspapers, magazines, and recently the Internet and social media. This talk is based on a case study of the editorial cartoons drawn by the eminent Jordanian cartoonist Imad Hajjaj. It takes us into the political, cultural, social and ideological issues pertaining to Jordanian society from the cartoonist’s perspective as an insider in the Jordanian society. The talk concludes with an inventory of Hajjaj’s distinctive linguistic characteristics and stylistic techniques.
