The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting “Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.”
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting "Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison's 'A Mercy.'" In Toni Morrison’s novel "A Mercy," set in New England in 1690, Florens, a 16-year-old African-American woman, is on a journey to summon the blacksmith to save the life of her Mistress; the blacksmith is a free black man, a healer, and Florens’ lover. The small group of people with whom Florens lives, a multicultural, women-centered, somewhat egalitarian group becomes, for a short time, a family. The blacksmith and Florens reveal the role of African people in the construction of whiteness and Americanness as well as connections between economics, gender, sexuality, law, and religion in emerging constructions of blackness. Through Florens’ quest and the dissolution of the family group, Morrison signals both the failures and the possibilities revealed by revised understandings of American history.

The Denison Museum welcomes Robert N. Kraft presenting "Expressing Memories of Atrocity: Words, Images, and the Things People Carry."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Denison Museum welcomes Robert N. Kraft presenting "Expressing Memories of Atrocity: Words, Images, and the Things People Carry." Kraft is a professor of psychology, at Otterbein University. Beginning in the late 1970s, Holocaust archives began videotaping the oral testimony of Holocaust survivors. Housed in these archives are uniquely authored accounts of traumatic memory: thousands of hours of unconstrained recall from individuals who lived through extended atrocity. These archives then document the recall of personal experiences in the context of larger historical events. As a psychologist, Kraft studies oral testimony of Holocaust survivors to understand memory for atrocity and its aftermath and to characterize the persistent influence of such memory on the lives of the survivors. Unlike the topographic summaries of trauma in large correlational studies or the distant approximations in the laboratory, qualitative study of Holocaust testimony discloses what resides within each person: the phenomenology of the tormented. One goal of this research is to generalize the findings on the psychology of Holocaust survivors to other groups of people, including the survivors of widespread atrocities in Rwanda, Guatemala and Darfur.

The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Susan Diduk presenting “The Political Economy of Corporate Largess: Social Responsibility, Corporations and the Development Enterprise in Sub-Saharan Africa.”
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Susan Diduk presenting “The Political Economy of Corporate Largess: Social Responsibility, Corporations and the Development Enterprise in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Since the 1990s foreign direct investment has grown significantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This growth is embedded in the neoliberal project with its push toward privatization, deregulation of markets, and capital accumulation. A growing, yet less visible sector in this process, concerns the new corporate social responsibility (CSR) agendas of transnational corporations (TNCs). This paper examines the growth of “development projects” funded by transnational business, for example, in areas like education, healthcare and potable water. Diduk consider's such “community development” initiatives funded by TNCs and their interconnected relationships with the state, as well as local urban and rural communities in the Republic of Cameroon. I examine especially the intended and unintended effects of these policies, and their deeply troubling implications for “development encounters” more broadly.

Fundación Siglo de Oro, a 10-year-old company based in Madrid and specialised in Spanish Golden Age productions, presents "Entre Marta y Lope."
Show Event Details
Full Description: What William Shakespeare is to England, Lope de Vega is to Spain. The 17th century playwright led a colorful life of court intrigue, with multiple romantic entanglements, and he was deeply admired by Miguel de Cervantes, of Don Quixote fame. His prodigious output of literally thousands of plays, sonnets and poems earned him the nickname “Monster of Nature.” The play “Entre Marta y Lope” depicts the end of Lope’s life with his beloved Marta de Nevares. The play will be presented in Spanish with projected English translations at Denison University’s Burke Hall Black Box Theatre (240 West Broadway). “Entre Marta y Lope” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, and is free and open to the public. The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Ziad Abu-Rish presenting "Jordan, the Arab Uprisings, and the Legacies of State Formation."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Ziad Abu-Rish presenting "Jordan, the Arab Uprisings, and the Legacies of State Formation." This presentation will discuss the reverberations of the Arab uprisings in Jordan between 2011 and 2013. While activist groups and various other political forces organized demonstrations in Jordan during this period, neither the number of people who took to the streets nor the nature of the demands advanced by them approximated those of protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, and elsewhere. This presentation will offer an explanation rooted in historical institutionalism, regime-opposition dynamics, and the strategic importance of Jordan to regional and global powers. In short, the desire of the Jordanian citizenry for a more transparent, accountable, and socio-economically just political system is no less than any other part of the world. Abu-Rish is an assistant professor of Middle East history in the Department of History at Ohio University.

The Department of Studio Art welcomes Vail Visiting Artist Jeffry Mitchell for an artist's talk.
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Department of Studio Art welcomes Vail Visiting Artist Jeffry Mitchell for an artist's talk. For nearly three decades, Jeffry Mitchell has kept the art world perplexed. His work defies categorization, bouncing freely between craft and fine art, high and low, kitsch and the refined. Raised Catholic and increasingly drawn to Eastern philosophies, the artist has assembled an oeuvre that is redolent with allusions to redemption and transcendence as realized through sex, death, and religion. Most well known for his humorous yet sophisticated ceramics and pattern-filled works on paper, Mitchell seamlessly melds Eastern and Western precedents with references to pop culture, repeated floral motifs, and subtle sexual innuendos codified by the history of ceramics.

The Department of Philosophy welcomes the community to a discussion of "Human Potential: Realization or Possibility?"
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Department of Philosophy welcomes the community to a discussion of "Human Potential: Realization or Possibility?" Is there a limit to human potential? If so, what is the nature of this limitation? Is there an ideal, a telos, that we ought to strive for; a cognitive or biological constraint on its growth? Or, if humanity is not infinitely perfectable, then is it at least infinitely variable? Do we have an obligation to develop to our fullest? BIO: Dr. Christopher Pincock is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at the Ohio State University. His research is centered on the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of science and the history of analytic philosophy.

Full Description: The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Awad Halabi presenting "From Coup d’états to Alliances: The US Involvement in the Middle East Since WWII." This talk examines the larger trends that have characterized US involvement in the Middle East since WWII, such as maintaining access to oil in the region and preventing the Soviet Union from gaining a presence in the area. These larger interests have shaped how the US has engaged with questions of democracy in the Middle East, such as at time sponsoring coup d’états and other times forging alliances with monarchies and dictators. Halabi is an associate professor serving in the departments of history and religion at Wright State University specializing in the Middle East and Islam.

Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Brenda Boyle presenting “Recollecting Vietnam: The Stories Americans Tell.” The stories we tell about war not only shape how we think about a particular war but also influence our willingness to engage in future wars. Fiction and non-fiction narratives about American involvement in Viet Nam before and during the 1965-1973 Vietnam War tell historically contextualized tales of Americans arrogantly following in the steps of their French allies, whose war to recolonize Viet Nam after World War II the United States funded and then took up after the French defeat in 1954 and the division of the country into North and South Vietnam.
