The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Melanie Finney presenting "Northern Ireland's Continuing Quest for Peace."
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Melanie Finney presenting "Northern Ireland's Continuing Quest for Peace." In 1998, citizens on both sides of the border of Ireland and Northern Ireland ratified the Good Friday Belfast Agreement. Brokered in part by former U.S. Senator George Mitchell, the agreement was considered an end of violence during the period known as the Troubles, and the beginning of a joint, government and community. However, many issues remain unresolved in the 16 years since the agreement was made. This paper examines some of these issues and argues that the ongoing peace process is still tenuous. Several issues are still contested in Northern Ireland, including observation of various cultural traditions such as display of flags and parading, memorialization and commemoration of specific sites related to the Troubles, and the concerns with the process of truth and reconciliation. Finney will also discuss the Boston College interviews that prompted international debate and led to the arrest of Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams in Spring 2014 and how these events have further jeopardized the peace process. Finney teaches in the departments of communication and theatre at DePauw University.

The Department of Philosophy welcomes Christopher Pincock presenting "Newton, Laplace and Salmon on Explaining the Tides" for the Titus-Hepp Lecture Series.
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Department of Philosophy welcomes Christopher Pincock presenting "Newton, Laplace and Salmon on Explaining the Tides" for the Titus-Hepp Lecture Series. Pincock states: "Salmon cites Newton's explanation of the tides in support of a causal account of scientific explanation. In this paper I reconsider the details of how Newton and his successors actually succeeded in explaining several key features of the tides. It turns out that these explanations depend on elements that are not easily interpreted in causal terms. I use the explanations offered after Newton to indicate two different ways that non-causal factors can be significant for scientific explanation. In Newton's equilibrium explanation, only a few special features of the tides can be explained. A later explanation deploys a kind of harmonic analysis to provide an informative classification of the tides at different locations. I consider the options for making sense of these explanations." Christopher Pincock is an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department at the Ohio State University. His research is centered on the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of science and the history of analytic philosophy.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Department of Studio Art and the Denison Museum present a student exhibition, "Curiosity Ignites." The exhibition demonstrates the ways with which the museum’s cross cultural collection can be a springboard for creative ideas and personal research, as well as connect to contemporary studio practice for studio art students. In creating their artworks, seniors from the studio art seminar class, Visual Arts Practicum, were given a guided tour through the Denison Museum’s collection of more than 8,000 items and asked to choose an object that seemed interesting to them. The objects ranged from Burmese sculptures to central African masks and even French war cartoons. The students responded in a variety of artistic mediums, including painting, sculpture and photography.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Harry Heft presenting “Public Spaces and the Life of Communities: Reflections on the Design of the Denison Campus.” The social significance of spaces in the public realm, mostly notably, “the spaces between buildings,” has tended to be neglected in the design fields for over a century. It was once well understood that the “the spaces between buildings” are where civic life takes root and possibilities for unplanned, meaningful social relationships reside. Over the past 30 years designers and planners have slowly rediscovered the significance of creating the kinds of public spaces that cultivate social exchange. How does the Denison campus measure up in this regard? Has the undeniably ‘picturesque’ character of our campus led us to overlook the need for design features that contribute to the development of a rich living community?
