    Show Event Details
Full Description: A Philosophy Coffee at the Denison Museum discusses "Tragedy, Memory, and Memorial" in the context of the work of Kara Walker. Who has the most right to shape our collective memories? Is dramatization acceptable? What role can or ought humor play (if any)? In answering these questions we should bear in mind that we sometimes accord the memory of tragedies respect for the sake of the people who suffered through them while at other times we do so in order to secure a better future. Which is more important? For whom do we bear witness?

The Philosophy Department and Black Studies Program welcome Charles Mills presenting 'Liberalism and Racial Justice.'
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Philosophy Department and Black Studies Program welcome Charles Mills presenting 'Liberalism and Racial Justice.' Mill's book "The Racial Contract" won a Myers Outstanding Book Award for the study of bigotry and human rights in North America. It has been adopted widely in courses across the United States (more than 100 campuses so far), not just in philosophy, but also political science, sociology, anthropology, African-American, and race relations. “Liberalism and Racial Justice” Historically, liberalism has been more often complicit with white supremacy and racial injustice than an ally against them. Understandably, then, many progressives would look elsewhere for an emancipatory anti-racist political ideology. However, liberalism can be retrieved for a racial justice project, but it will take a radical rethinking of liberalism's history and structure to carry out this task properly.

Full Description: The Titus-Hepp Lecture Series welcomes Charles Mills of Northwestern University presenting “Racial Equality.” Mills states: "Racial equality has been a moral and political demand from people of color for hundreds of years. But discussions within philosophy of this concept, and what it would take to realize it as an ideal, are still comparatively rare. In this paper I will look at some of the different dimensions of racial equality, the theoretical problems it poses for Rawlsian justice theory, and offer some suggestions as to how I think these challenges might be addressed."

Full Description: The Department of Communication presents screening of "Fixed: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement." This film takes a close look at the drive to be “better than human” and the radical technological innovations that may take us there. What does “disabled” mean when a man with no legs can run faster than most people in the world? What does “normal” mean when cosmetic surgery procedures have risen over 450% percent in the last fifteen years? With prenatal screening able to predict hundreds of probable conditions, who should determine what kind of people get to be born? If you could augment your body’s abilities in any way imaginable, would you? A Q and A session with filmmaker Regan Brashear will take place after the screening.
