The Titus Hepp Series welcomes Rachel Cohon presenting "Promises: Hume, Scanlon, and Voluntary Self-Obligation."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Titus Hepp Series welcomes Rachel Cohon presenting "Promises: Hume, Scanlon, and Voluntary Self-Obligation." Underlying their well-known disagreement about whether we need a social practice in order to make (binding) promises, David Hume and T. M. Scanlon have a deeper disagreement about promises. Surprisingly, Hume regards a voluntary act of self-obligation as essential to promising, while Scanlon does not; and (also surprisingly) Hume does not regard assuring the other person of what you will do as essential to promising, while of course Scanlon does. There are interesting reasons why Hume may have held these positions, and why they might be closer to the truth than Scanlon's. Professor Cohon received her PhD from U.C.L.A. Her fields of interest are ethics, the philosophy of action, and the history of ethics. She teaches graduate courses in moral theory, including such topics as consequentialism vs. deontology vs. virtue ethics, moral realism, the normativity of ethics, and eighteenth century moral philosophy.

The departments of cinema and mathematics and computer science present a screening of the film "Codebreaker."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The departments of cinema and mathematics and computer science present a screening of the film "Codebreaker." Alan Turing is the genius British mathematician who helped save millions of lives by breaking the German naval Enigma code during World War II. He also was the visionary scientist who gave birth to the computer age, pioneered artificial intelligence, and was the first to investigate the mathematical underpinnings of the living world. Instead of recognition for his genius, Alan Turing was driven to a terrible despair and early death – by the nation he had done so much to save. In the last 18 months of his short life, Turing visited a psychiatrist, Dr. Franz Greenbaum, who tried to help him. Each therapy session in the film is based on real events. The conversations between Turing and Greenbaum explore the pivotal moments in his remarkable life and examine the pressures that may have contributed to his suicide. The film also includes the testimony of people who actually knew and remember Turing. Plus, CODEBREAKER features interviews with contemporary experts from the world of technology and high science including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. These contributors bring Turing’s remarkable impact up to the present day, explaining why, in many ways; modern technology has only just begun to explore the potential of Turing’s ideas.

The Global Seminar Series welcomes Smoki Musaraj presenting: "Corruption Indicators, Global Governance and Local Political Drama: A Case-study from Postsocialist Albania."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Global Seminar Series welcomes Smoki Musaraj presenting: "Corruption Indicators, Global Governance and Local Political Drama: A Case-study from Postsocialist Albania." Since the mid-1990s, there has been a boom in corruption indicators across the globe. Recent works on the politics and sociology of production of corruption as well as other types of indicators have brought attention to the politics and economics of production and deployment of such indicators, especially their impact on governance, both global and local. This talk presents an ethnographic study of the production and deployment of corruption indicators in Albania, a country that relies heavily on international development aid and recently became a candidate for European Union membership. Musaraj traces the production of one corruption perception survey in Albania through a global network of actors and follows the circulation and use of its results among various local political actors. Musaraj is assistant professor of anthropology at Ohio University. Her research focuses on the anthropology of money and value, speculative economic practices in cash economies, corruption indicators and global governance, and postsoscialist transformations.

The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting “Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.”
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Linda Krumholz presenting “Reading and Responsibility in Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.” In Toni Morrison’s novel “A Mercy,” set in New England in 1690, Florens, a 16-year-old African-American woman, is on a journey to summon the blacksmith to save the life of her Mistress; the blacksmith is a free black man, a healer, and Florens’ lover. The small group of people with whom Florens lives, a multicultural, women-centered, somewhat egalitarian group becomes, for a short time, a family. The blacksmith and Florens reveal the role of African people in the construction of whiteness and Americanness as well as connections between economics, gender, sexuality, law, and religion in emerging constructions of blackness. Through Florens’ quest and the dissolution of the family group, Morrison signals both the failures and the possibilities revealed by revised understandings of American history.

The Denison Museum welcomes Robert N. Kraft presenting "Expressing Memories of Atrocity: Words, Images, and the Things People Carry."
Show Event Details
Full Description: The Denison Museum welcomes Robert N. Kraft presenting "Expressing Memories of Atrocity: Words, Images, and the Things People Carry." Kraft is a professor of psychology, at Otterbein University. Beginning in the late 1970s, Holocaust archives began videotaping the oral testimony of Holocaust survivors. Housed in these archives are uniquely authored accounts of traumatic memory: thousands of hours of unconstrained recall from individuals who lived through extended atrocity. These archives then document the recall of personal experiences in the context of larger historical events. As a psychologist, Kraft studies oral testimony of Holocaust survivors to understand memory for atrocity and its aftermath and to characterize the persistent influence of such memory on the lives of the survivors. Unlike the topographic summaries of trauma in large correlational studies or the distant approximations in the laboratory, qualitative study of Holocaust testimony discloses what resides within each person: the phenomenology of the tormented. One goal of this research is to generalize the findings on the psychology of Holocaust survivors to other groups of people, including the survivors of widespread atrocities in Rwanda, Guatemala and Darfur.

Show Event Details
Full Description: The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Susan Diduk presenting “The Political Economy of Corporate Largess: Social Responsibility, Corporations and the Development Enterprise in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Since the 1990s foreign direct investment has grown significantly in Sub-Saharan Africa. This growth is embedded in the neoliberal project with its push toward privatization, deregulation of markets, and capital accumulation. A growing, yet less visible sector in this process, concerns the new corporate social responsibility (CSR) agendas of transnational corporations (TNCs). This paper examines the growth of “development projects” funded by transnational business, for example, in areas like education, healthcare and potable water. Diduk consider's such “community development” initiatives funded by TNCs and their interconnected relationships with the state, as well as local urban and rural communities in the Republic of Cameroon. I examine especially the intended and unintended effects of these policies, and their deeply troubling implications for “development encounters” more broadly.
