The Tuesday Faculty Lunch Series welcomes Eric Liebl presenting “Stop Eating and Go Take a Walk!” Liebl’s lab uses genetic tools to study how the fruit fly central nervous system organizes itself during early development. Unexpectedly, they have uncovered a genetic interaction that alters the behavior of fly larva (caterpillars). At about four days into development normal fly larva switch from a focus on eating (called the forager stage) to being un- interested in eating and focused on crawling around in preparation to form a pupae (cocoon) (called the wanderer stage). The mutant animals remain foragers. So if you find yourself constantly interested in eating and not especially interested in moving around or exercising, this talk may be of interest.
