Full Description: Lena Salaymeh, Robbins Postdoctoral Fellow, UC Berkeley School of Law, will present a lecture, “Invisible civilians: the legal rhetoric of contemporary warfare.” Her presentation examines recent quasi-legal positions that seek to legitimize the killing of civilians in warfare. She argues that both state and non-state actors use the same basic legal analysis and argumentation in laying claim to the "legality" (in Islamic or international terms) of their violent acts. The broader intervention demonstrates how similar so-called "secular" and "religious" legal arguments really are. Free and open to the public.
