    Can the Eurozone survive?
The Global Studies Seminar welcomes Fadhel Kaboub presenting "Can the Eurozone Survive without Financial Sovereignty?"
Full Description: Fadhel Kaboub, assistant professor of economics will present a lecture, "Can the Eurozone Survive without Financial Sovereignty?" This presentation argues that the 17 eurozone countries have sacrificed a fundamental economic lifeline by giving up their financial sovereignty to the European Central Bank. Without full financial sovereignty, countries like Greece, Spain and Portugal are forced to abide by very stringent austerity policies to reduce government spending and raise taxes in order to balance the budget and payoff the national debt. In the meanwhile, unemployment continues to rise (28% in Greece) and economic misery threatens an entire generation of young European men and women (64% youth unemployment in Greece). Can the eurozone survive its first debt crisis? Can there be a successful European single currency union without a truly sovereign financial authority? Are Germany and France still immune from a sovereign debt crisis? What's their secret? All of these questions and many more will be answered during this interactive Global Studies session. Free and open to the public.
