Professor Joseph S. Alter of the University of Pittsburgh will presents “Yoga as Nature Cure: Modernity, Medicine, and the Global Political Ecology of Bodies.”
    Show Event Details
Full Description: Professor Joseph S. Alter of the University of Pittsburgh will presents “Yoga as Nature Cure: Modernity, Medicine, and the Global Political Ecology of Bodies.” Alter has been professor of anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh since 1994, and in 2015 will move to Yale-NUS College, Singapore, as professor of social sciences, anthropology. He is a specialist on the history and practice of yoga both in India and globally, and he has published numerous books and articles on yoga, health and science. In his talk he shows that a full history of yoga needs to see its global spread within the context of the twentieth-century rise of “nature cure” as an alternative form of medicine. This allows us to see how yoga in contemporary practice also is a form of nature cure.

Hillbilly Idol reaches back to embrace the traditions of bluegrass, western swing, and honky tonk, and brings them forward to "water the roots" of those traditions today. The band has produced three critically acclaimed CDs including Town and Country, Hillbilly Idol, and Lights of Town. It might not be your grandfather's country music, but he'd probably approve!

The Denison Singers present a celebratory concert in honor of their 54th reunion, under the direction of Emeritus Faculty William Osborne.
    Show Event Details
Full Description: "The Denison Singers at 54" is the name of the reunion program the choral group brings to the Swasey Chapel stage this summer. In their 590th performance, the Denison Singers present an eclectic program of literature from past and present. Included are Jubilate Deo by Benjamin Britten (1913–76), movements from Four Pastorales by Cecil Effinger (1914–90), Missa Brevis and Praeludium in G minor by Dieterich Buxtehude (1637–1707), Pianosong by Paul Halley, The Silver Swan by Orlando Gibbons (1583–1625), Sing We and Chant It by Thomas Morley (1557/8–1602). Also featured in the program are first performances of The Lobster Quadrille by former Denison faculty member William Stevens, Let There Be Light by Denison Singer Clifford Davis '72, and Swedish Meatballs by Denison Singer R. Michael Daugherty '71. The Denison Singers are conducted by the group's founder and only leader, Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus William Osborne. More than a half century ago, an ad hoc group of students met in a basement music classroom during September 1961 in what was then the Life Science Building (now Higley Hall) with the goal of organizing a new choral ensemble that would complement the activities of the Chapel and Concert Choirs. The result: The Denison Madrigal Singers, a group initially devoted to the presentation of those secular partsongs from Renaissance Italy and England in particular. The group's interests widened almost immediately, leading to a name change and a first tour during the spring vacation of 1963. While The Singers appeared regularly on campus, the group toured regularly, first during spring breaks and then during the January and May terms, eventually appearing in 24 states and the District of Columbia, as well as on a dozen foreign tours that took them across much of Europe, from The Netherlands to Greece, Portugal to Russia, as well as to Venezuela. The ensemble was formally disbanded upon Osborne's retirement in 2003, however, the group lives on through periodic reunions. This will be the 13th such reunion in Granville since the tradition began in 1979.
