    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Dave Goodwin, associate professor of geosciences, presenting “One hundred eighty two years and counting: A look back at the development of a discipline as seen in geology textbooks from the University archive.”There is a long-standing and storied tradition of geoscience education here at Denison. In fact, geology has been part of the core curriculum since the founding of the college. A recent and unexpected encounter with an old, dusty textbook spurred me to learn more about this history. In this presentation, I will briefly illustrate the development of the discipline as seen in the textbooks used in geology classes here at Denison. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

Managing these issues will require a vibrant and healthy civil society. Higher education must play a substantial role in this process. Doing so requires reframing global debates on higher education and rethinking the basic principles that shape contemporary approaches to civic education. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Tom Bressoud presenting "Cloud Computing: Opportunities and Challenges.”
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Tom Bressoud, associate professor of computer science and chair, presenting "Cloud Computing: Opportunities and Challenges.” In the past handful of years, Cloud Computing has become the next "Big Thing". But Cloud Computing means different things to different constituencies, from IT professionals to Financial Officers to Computer Scientists to ordinary users. And there is more than a little marketing hype that clouds the subject even further (pun intended). The goal of this talk is threefold -- first, we want to fill in the gaps and unify the perspectives of exactly what constitutes cloud computing. Second, we want to sort through the hype and see what opportunities are presented by Cloud Computing. And third, we will look, from a computer science perspective, at the challenges and interesting problems that arise from this new paradigm of computing. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Doug Spieles presenting "The Land Trust Movement in America and Licking County.”
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Doug Spieles, associate professor of environmental studies, presenting "The Land Trust Movement in America and Licking County.” Most of us are familiar with the fabulous collection of protected public lands in the United States; hopefully you've had a chance to visit a national park, bird sanctuary, wilderness area or wildlife reserve. Less well known is the explosive movement to protect private lands in this country. Privately held land under conservation or agricultural protection now encompasses about 50 million acres in the U.S.--nearly the same area as our national parks. Protection of these private lands is overseen by 1,700 local, state, and national Land Trusts. In this presentation I'll explore the role of Land Trusts in terms of land use planning, community building and ecological conservation. In particular, I'll explain the work of our very own Licking Land Trust. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Toni King, associate provost; Erik Farley, associate dean of students and director of multicultural affairs; and the Posse Foundation Staff presenting "The Posse Program and Denison: Pragmatic Opportunity or Utopian Ideal?”The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Colleges then partner with the Posse Foundation to award these students full tuition scholarships and the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence as members of supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. Now that Denison has had more than a decade of experience with the Posse Program it is time to reflect on Posse and Denison. Has this programmatic initiative been primarily a pragmatic opportunity? Or has it helped Denison to foster a utopian ideal? Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Mark Orten, director of religious and spiritual life, presenting “Religious Beliefs and Practices at Denison.” In the Spring of 2013 the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life at Denison contracted with the Inter-Faith Youth Core in Chicago to administer a comprehensive survey to the entire student body with a 19.02% response rate. This assessment gives us baseline information regarding (1) overall religious identity and engagement among Denison students, (2) perceptions regarding the existing religious/spiritual communities and campus resources for religious/spiritual engagement (including its staff, facilities, programs) and, (3) general sentiments with regard to the importance of religious and spiritual dimensions of students’ experience at Denison (such as engaging questions of morality and ethics, participating in spiritual practices, etc.) as a part of their undergraduate education. Results of this survey and reflections by the Director of the CRSL and Chaplaincy Intern will be presented. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Margot Singer presenting “The Bendable Art of Creative Nonfiction.” Creative nonfiction—including memoir, narrative journalism, personal and lyric essays—is arguably the most exciting area on the literary scene today. But in recent years, the hot debate over where to draw the line between fact and fiction has sidelined important questions of literary form. How does nonfiction actually work? How does it recombine and transform elements of other genres? What distinguishes nonfiction from other kinds of prose? This presentation will share highlights from a new collection of critical essays, "Bending Genre: Essays on Creative Nonfiction," in which leading writers explore nonfiction’s hybridism, innovative structures, and unconventional forms. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.
