The Vail Series welcomes genre-spanning violinist Regina Carter. The Vail Series welcomes genre-spanning violinist Regina Carter for her Southern Comfort Concert.
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Vail Series welcomes genre-spanning violinist Regina Carter for her Southern Comfort Concert. For Carter, the violin isn’t merely an improvisational vehicle. It’s a passport to unexpected realms, a Rosetta stone that unlocks the door to a myriad of cultures and worlds. Southern Comfort thematically connects Carter’s earlier albums I’ll Be Seeing You: A Sentimental Journey (2006), which features her mother’s favorite early jazz standards; and Reverse Thread (2010) which celebrates the tradition of African music re-imagined for violin, accordion, bass and kora. On her new album she explores the folk tunes her paternal grandfather, a coal miner, would have heard as he toiled in Alabama – and the project expanded to include other folk tunes of the region. Intent on making the past, present, Regina sought out distant relatives and books about the era in which her grandfather lived. From there, she went to the Library of Congress and the renowned collections of folklorists such as Alan Lomax and John Work III digging deep into their collected field recordings from Appalachia. On Southern Comfort, Regina interprets her own roots through a modern lens.

Full Description: The Vail Series welcomes vocalist Cyrille Aimée. Winner of both the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition, Aimée explores a range of musical styles, eras, continents and moods on her album "It’s A Good Day," with a singular voice on inventive arrangements. Aimée’s musical outlook is reflected in an emphasis on the guitar, an instrument with an indigenous form in nearly every culture of the world—and it was the sound of the gypsy guitar that inspired Aimée to become a musician. While growing up in Samois-sur- Seine, Aimée snuck out of her home to the nearby gypsy encampments and was mesmerized by the music of those who followed the spirit of Django Reinhardt, revered as one of the world’s most influential guitarists. Aimée—who as a child also lived in Paris, Cameroon, Singapore and the Dominican Republic—later became fascinated with Brazilian guitar, and her music reveals a thorough understanding of bossa nova and samba idioms. She has now settled in Brooklyn, where she continues to absorb the inner workings of American jazz and the culture of the music’s homeland.

    Indie-classical quartet ETHEL presents 'Documerica'
    Show Event Details
Full Description: Indie-classical quartet ETHEL presents their landmark "Documerica," a meditation on America’s relationship to our land, our resources, and ourselves. Documerica is a multimedia concert that melds screen video projections with original music by some of today’s top composers. Described by The New York Times as “new music bonding with old images in rich, provocative and moving ways,” this evening-long program was created in collaboration with projection designer Deborah Johnson and directed by Steve Cosson. ETHEL’s Documerica juxtaposes manipulated vintage 1970’s visuals with the music of today. Inspired by and showcasing evocative imagery from Project Documerica, a 1970’s photographic archive commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency, the program explores this compelling snapshot of a tumultuous era that powerfully connects to today’s environmental and social issues. Featuring new work by ETHEL members and commissioned composers Mary Ellen Childs, Ulysses Owens Jr., Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, and James Kimo Williams, the program’s music is in constant dialogue with the projections in an arc that is by turns urban, rural, pastoral, and gritty. ETHEL selected composers for ETHEL’s Documerica who represent the diversity of America. Hailing from different regions, backgrounds and generations, and influenced by a variety of musical practices, genres and forms, each contributes his or her distinctive voice to the program.
