This presentation treats both classical and contemporary views of liberal arts education, with authors ranging from Confucius, Matthew Arnold and John Henry Newman to Alasdair MacIntyre, Richard Rorty, J.D. Salinger, and Stephen Hawking. Haldane just returned from presentations given at the six hundredth anniversary of the founding of the University of St. Andrews. Free and open to the public.

Curtis is Millennium Chair of the Liberal Arts and Professor of religious studies at Indiana-Purdue University. He is the author or editor of several books, including "Muslims in America: A Short History," which was named one of the best 100 books of 2009 by Publishers Weekly. A former NEH Fellow at the National Humanities Center, he has been awarded Carnegie, Fulbright and Mellon Fellowships. Free and open to the public.

    Full Description: The Goodspeed Lecture Series welcomes Anthea Butler presenting “From Republican Party to Republican Religion: How the Religious Right moved from the margins to the center of political action.” Anthea Butler is associate professor of religious studies and graduate chair in the department of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her most recent book, "Women in the Church of God in Christ, Making A Sanctified World," chronicles the history of African American women’s religious lives, and civic engagement in the Church of God in Christ, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States. Butler's forthcoming book is "The Gospel According to Sarah: How Sarah Palin and the Tea Party are Galvanizing the Religious Right." Free and open to the public.

    Full Description: The Goodspeed Lecture Series welcomes Timothy Beal presenting “The Word According to Rihanna: Bible and Religion in Memeland and Beyond.” Beal is the Florence Harkness Professor of Religion at Case Western Reserve University and editor-in-chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and the Arts (in progress). He has published 13 books and many scholarly articles on the cultural history of the Bible, religion and popular culture, and relations between critical theory and academic religious studies. He also has published essays on religion and American culture for The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, CNN.com, The Washington Post, and The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post. He has been featured on national radio shows including NPR’s All Things Considered. Free and open to the public.

    Full Description: The Goodspeed Lecture Series welcomes Maia Kotrosits presenting her lecture "Who is the 'I am'?: Gender, Divinity, and Uncertainty in Ancient Christianity." Kotrosits received her Ph.D. in New Testament from Union Theological Seminary. Her work creates points of contact between ancient Christian literature and contemporary cultural studies, queer and gender theories. She has co-authored two books, "The Thunder: Perfect Mind: An Introduction" and "New Translation, and Re-Reading the Gospel of Mark Amidst Loss and Trauma." A fellow of the Westar Institute, Kotrosits edits the Bible and Cultural Studies book series with Palgrave Macmillan.
