The University Programing Council welcomes journalist Jose Antonio Vargas.
    Show Event Details
Full Description: The University Programing Council welcomes Jose Antonio Vargas. A journalist for over a decade, writing for some of the most prestigious news organizations in the country, Jose Antonio Vargas’ personal journey contends with some of the most fascinating stories he’s covered, living a double life since he was 16 years old. After being born and reared in the Philippines, his mother, wanting to give her son a better life, sent him to live with his grandparents in Silicon Valley in 1993. Vargas loved his new homeland and immersed himself in American culture, spoke the language perfectly, studied hard in school and loved writing for the school paper. However, at 16-years-old, when applying for his learner’s permit, he discovered his green card was a fake, which was later confirmed by his grandfather. Vargas then realized he needed to continue hiding his true identity to avoid deportation and be able to pursue his American dream – a career in journalism. Vargas will discuss his long career in journalism, his website, DefineAmerican.com, and he will delve into his personal life's journey which will address issues that are facing our world today, including illegal immigration and trying to navigate life in America as an openly gay male.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: Erik Klemetti, assistant professor of geosciences presents a Global Studies Seminar: "Lost Monsters: Forgotten Giant Eruptions and How They Impacted the Planet."Very large volcanic eruptions can have a profound impact on the Earth's climate. They are singular events that can throw billions of tons of volcanic ash and aerosols like sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. However, as large as these events might be, some of the biggest eruptions in the past 15,000 years are unknown to most people. This talk will look at five eruptions from around the globe that are historically obscure but volcanically profound, including very large eruptions in New Zealand (Taupo), Germany (Laacher See), Peru (Huaynaputina), Mexico (El Chichón) and Alaska (White River). These events erupted over 10 cubic kilometers of volcanic ash and debris, making them some of the largest in human history. Eruptions of this magnitude today could have a sizable impact on global travel and agriculture, yet climate and culture have proven to be resilient in the face of these massive events. Free and open to the public.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Tom Bressoud, associate professor of computer science and chair, presenting "Cloud Computing: Opportunities and Challenges.” In the past handful of years, Cloud Computing has become the next "Big Thing". But Cloud Computing means different things to different constituencies, from IT professionals to Financial Officers to Computer Scientists to ordinary users. And there is more than a little marketing hype that clouds the subject even further (pun intended). The goal of this talk is threefold -- first, we want to fill in the gaps and unify the perspectives of exactly what constitutes cloud computing. Second, we want to sort through the hype and see what opportunities are presented by Cloud Computing. And third, we will look, from a computer science perspective, at the challenges and interesting problems that arise from this new paradigm of computing. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.

    Show Event Details
Full Description: The Tuesday Lunch Series welcomes Doug Spieles, associate professor of environmental studies, presenting "The Land Trust Movement in America and Licking County.” Most of us are familiar with the fabulous collection of protected public lands in the United States; hopefully you've had a chance to visit a national park, bird sanctuary, wilderness area or wildlife reserve. Less well known is the explosive movement to protect private lands in this country. Privately held land under conservation or agricultural protection now encompasses about 50 million acres in the U.S.--nearly the same area as our national parks. Protection of these private lands is overseen by 1,700 local, state, and national Land Trusts. In this presentation I'll explore the role of Land Trusts in terms of land use planning, community building and ecological conservation. In particular, I'll explain the work of our very own Licking Land Trust. Open to emeriti faculty, faculty and staff.
