June-O: Meet the Staff
June Orientation Program
A word from the June-O Student Staff coordinators:
Welcome to the wonderful world of Denison! We are all so excited to have you join our amazing community and for you to embark on these next four years. College is an extremely special time in your life where you get to experience a multitude of new things and discover who you are and who you want to be - thus, college can also be a challenge. However, Denison is a beautiful place filled with beautiful people that are devoted to supporting students in every way possible to ensure your success and happiness. Now is the time to step out of your comfort zone to try new things and engage with new people - part of being a Denisonian means learning how to be accepting, thoughtful, and an individual. But as you’ll learn over the next few years, what matters more than anything else are the relationships you build and foster with your fellow students, your professors, and the Denison community as a whole. We are so eager for you to begin your exciting journey here at Denison. We are so proud to be students here and to call this hill “home,” and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Nina Artigas ‘18
Hi! My name is Nina Artigas and I am from Montclair, New Jersey. I am a sophomore currently studying Communication. I love field hockey, kickboxing, travel Instagrams, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. On campus I am the coordinator for Intramural Sports at Denison, a big sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and the Philanthropic Communications Chair of my sorority. I came to Denison because of their academic reputation, small class sizes, and the beautiful campus. My fondest memories of Denison will be the times spend with my amazing friends and any run-in with President Weinberg. I applied to be a June-O leader because I had an amazing June-O experience and I want incoming students to feel the same excitement as I did!
Trent Babb ‘17
My name is Trent Babb. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio and I will be a rising senior. I am a former member of the track program and the current president of Club Basketball. I love meeting new people and getting to know others from numerous locations, whether it be nationally or worldwide. My entire family was born in Barbados so I enjoy the differences in culture. I can’t wait to meet all of you!
Janyce Carballo ‘17
Hey everyone! I'm a rising Senior, which I still haven't come to terms with, from Chicago, Illinois! I'm a Theatre Major, Music Performance Minor, and proud POSSE scholar! On campus you can find me in a cappella practice with our all female group, Ladies' Night Out, producing student shows with Denison's Independent Theatre Association, in the Office of Admissions as a Tour Guide/Senior Interviewer, or organizing a women empowerment event with my multi-cultural sorority 'Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc.' I can't wait to get to know all of you and welcome you into the community here on our beautiful hill!
Bronwen Espen ‘18
Hi everyone! I am a junior from Bowling Green, Ohio majoring in International Studies and Spanish with a concentration in Latin American and Caribbean Studies! Next year on campus I will be the President of SHARE (Sexual Assault and Rape Education), a Spanish tutor, and a Spanish TA. I'm also studying abroad in Mexico next spring! I chose Denison because I love one-on-one relationships with both my peers and professors, which this school fosters wonderfully. My favorite Denison experience was coordinating last spring's alternative break trip to Gaston, North Carolina where my volunteer group worked in a rural charter school for a week. I look forward to seeing you all on the hill!
Cheyenne Evans ‘16
Hi! I'm Cheyenne Evans and I'm a Posse scholar from Chicago! I love long walks on the beach, reading romance novels and butter pecan from Whits! This past year I was an RA and I am a member Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. Throughout my past four years I've been involved in BSU, Sustained Dialogue, volunteered at the YMCA, chaired the Legal Aid volunteer group and was a member of the cheerleading team. I am so glad that you decided to come to Denison and welcome you to the place I call home. I challenge you to take classes that not only interest you but also may be out of the norm. Don't be afraid to get to know Professors, students and staff, they're the ones that make this place special. Looking forward to meeting you!!
Bryan Fowler ‘16
Hi! I am a graduating senior from Westerville, Ohio with a major in Math, a minor in Economics and a concentration in Computational Sciences. I transferred here after spending my First Year at Ohio State and have never looked back. During my time at Denison I have worked as a department tutor and a Resident Assistant; I am also a member of Beta Theta Pi and I threw Javelin for the Track Team. I’m looking forward to helping you make the most of your college experience!
Kyle Gasaway ‘16
Hey! I’m a graduating senior, political science major with a philosophy minor. I really enjoy international affairs and concentrate on the East Asian sphere throughout my studies. I have had a lot of fun on the hill and got active right away. I joined student government, DCGA and was active within the senate for three years. But my senior year I choose to take a different path and got heavily involved in theatre. I did two main stage productions with the Theatre Department and loved my time acting on stage with my friends. I have also been apart of the Student Theatre on campus, DITA, for the past couple years and really found a community that I loved. I’m looking forward to meeting the incoming class and hope to give some sage advice to newcomers to Denison as I’m leaving the hill.
Oliver Gladfelter ‘18
Hello and welcome to Denison! I am a rising junior from Columbus, Ohio, studying History and Political Science. On campus I am a tour guide, the President of Denison Venture Philanthropy, a member of the Denison Campus Governance Association, I am in a fraternity, and I am the Head Resident of Shorney Hall. My favorite memory at Denison so far has been battling my friends in an all-campus midnight snowball fight on A-Quad. I applied to be a June-O leader because I love helping new students in anyway I can, so ask me about student government, greek life, community service, or anything else! I am also an expert on where all the free candy on campus is, so come find me if you would like that valuable information!
Emily Grabauskas ‘18
Hi everyone! I am a Psychology major from Annandale, Virginia. I fell in love with Denison because of its welcoming student body, its devoted faculty, and the beautiful campus. My favorite memories come from time spent with the amazing friends I have met here on the hill through the Cross Country and Track & Field teams and through my sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta! I hope that as a member of the June O Staff this year, I can make your transition to college as smooth and as fun as possible.
Ellen Higdon ‘18
Hi everyone! I'm a rising junior from Alton, Illinois studying math and communication. There are so many reasons why I love Denison, but the faculty, administration, and diverse student body are what make this place so special. My fondest memories here on the hill have been spent with my swimming and diving teammates and sorority sisters. Class of 2020, I can't wait to meet you and begin preparing for your next four years as Denisonians!
Morgan Hogenmiller ‘19
Hi guys! I’m a rising sophomore from Pittsburgh studying as a Communication major with a Spanish minor here at Denison. When I’m not studying, however, you can find me here on the hill singing a cappella, working for Admissions, writing Odyssey articles, or equally as possible, hanging and eating granola and peanut butter with the awesome peers, sorority sisters, and friends that I have met here over the past year. June-O holds a special place in my heart because it was only a year ago that I was in your shoes as a first year student, and I ended up meeting my roommates and some of my closest friends at this program! I can’t wait to get to meet all of you and help welcome you to this amazing school! :)
Dalia Ishaq ‘16
Hi, and welcome to our lovely university! I am a recent graduate with a biochemistry major. I am from Chicago, IL and I chose to come all the way here to Denison because it was a great fit for me. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and the liberal arts education is so interesting and rich with diverse classes and experiences. I really enjoyed my four years here and I got to be part of different activities. I was part of the Middle Eastern Cultural Organization, and The Denison Chemical society. As a student worker, I was a resident assistant and I tutored Arabic and Chemistry. If you have any questions about extra curriculars, I am more than happy to answer your questions! My favorite part of being at Denison is the opportunity to have close relationships. The small size of the school allowed me to have really close friends and amazing mentors. I am glad that you will soon start your journey at Denison, and I am looking forward to meeting you :)
Prat Iyer ‘18
Hi! I’m an Economics major, with minors in both English and Math (~liberal arts~). As an international student from Bangalore, India, I’ve never once felt like Denison isn’t home. With professors that go out of their way to help you, and an endless list of opportunities to get involved with, time here flies by faster than I ever realized. Some things I do on campus: I’m a Tour Guide, an Econ tutor, business manager of The Denisonian, part of the Concert choir, and a member of Greek Life! Can’t wait to meet you all!
Jayla Johnson, ‘19
Hi everyone! I'm a rising sophomore from Blacklick, Ohio and I'm double majoring in Women's & Gender Studies and Anthropology & Sociology. On campus, I am a violinist for the Denison Orchestra, a member of the Denison University Equestrian Team (DUET) and a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I'm also a vegetarian, a major bookworm and slightly obsessed with my dog. Some of my favorite Denison experiences, so far, have been performing in Swasey Chapel with the orchestra, participating in Denison Service Orientation (DSO) and making so many new, close friends. I'm incredibly happy to serve on the June-O staff and I can't wait to meet and welcome the incoming students to life on the hill!!
Jared Kriwinsky ‘16
Welcome to Denison! As a graduating senior, I can honestly say that I would not have traded my four years on the hill for anything. I've made friends for life, been challenged in ways that I never would have expected to be, and learned more than I every imagined I could. During my time I was a member of Delta Chi, IFC, Men's club rugby, student senate, served as a senior interviewer, and a variety of other activities. Next year I will be attending Ohio State's Moritz College of Law, and hope to practice either Civil Rights or Criminal law in the future. You all made a great choice coming to Denison, and I know you will be a class to remember.
Shannon Laws ‘16
My name is Shannon Laws and I've just graduated from Denison with a Bachelor's in French and Cinema which is crazyyyyyy. I love my dog, my plants, and I'm so excited to help introduce you to this fantastic school! We're going to have a great time!
Julia Ludwig ‘16
I am a graduating senior from Mentor, Ohio. During my time on the hill I was a Communication and English Literature double major, a member of the cheerleading team, and President of my sorority, Delta Gamma with a love for old movies, music, reading, and making new friends! My favorite thing about Denison is the people and community we have here (cliché yes, but true). While I am sad to be leaving, I am so excited for your next four years at Denison!
Lashonda Payne ‘17
Welcome to Denison class of 2020! I am so excited to get to know each of you this year! I am a Chemistry (Pre-Med) major from Pickerington, Ohio, and I love Chipotle, dogs, and meeting new people! Over the years, Denison has become my home away from home for so many reasons. From the students and stimulating classroom discussions to the organizations and life long connections, Denison will always hold a very special place in my heart. Throughout my time on campus, I have become heavily involved with the Residential Education department as a Head Resident, Denison Dazzlers Majorette Dance Team as a dancer, and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. as VP of recruitment. I also have a deep passion for community service, so I spend my time volunteering as a patient care companion with Hospice of Central Ohio, a lunch buddy with Big Brothers Big Sisters, and a community buddy/mentor figure in the surrounding area. It is hard to believe that I am embarking on my last year at Denison as a senior, but I can't wait to experience all that is in store!
Roger Phelps ‘16
As a recent graduate, I can already say that I miss the Hill and its amazing opportunities. From studying abroad in Melbourne to establishing and running a music festival on campus, I've flourished as a result of my Denison experience. Most importantly, I'll cherish the everlasting friendships with my peers and professors. Denison will forever be in my heart.
McKenna Ross ‘19
Hi guys! My name is McKenna Ross, and I'm a first-year (rising sophomore WOOT WOOT) from Lewis Center, Ohio! I'm currently majoring in History and minoring in German, and just for kicks, I'm also learning Greek in my free time. I'm active with Denison's First-Year Office, am a SHARE advocate, and am a newly initiated member of Kappa Kappa Gamma! Hope you all are looking forward to Denison, because there's no place like it!
Mac Sellars ‘16
Hello everyone! My name is Mac Sellars, and I am a graduating senior from just north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During my time at Denison I majored in Religion and primarily spent my extracurricular time engaged in music, Christian community, and various side projects designed to make campus a better place. I applied to be a June O leader because after four years of living at Denison, thoughtfully reflecting all the while, I felt that I could help the incoming generation of students adjust to and prepare for their future lives on the Hill. Looking forward to meeting you all!
Hieu Tran ‘17
I am from Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. I am a rising senior coming back from my semester of study abroad in France. I decided to go to Denison because I highly value the liberal arts tradition that it upholds. I love how we have the opportunity to interact and get one on one help from our professors and actively participate in the small class discussions. Other than academic experience, I sincerely appreciate the diversity that Denison have on campus, which makes meeting people, making friends, and learning about the world a wonderful experience.

Chicago born and raised,
soccer is my game.
This poem may seem lame,
But Denison is far from tame.
Flying my rainbow flag high,
This place will help you reach the sky.
Once you leave, you'll be
counting down the days.
New school, new babe pool.
So don't act no fool.
Your girl's got a lifetime of knowledge,
Come live it up at America's #1 liberal arts college.
