National Campus Sustainability Day
October 23 marks an important day for our campus sustainability efforts. The 23rd is National Campus Sustainability Day and we celebrate it each by launching our annual campus sustainability pledge. Last year over 400 members of the community signed. This year our pledge takes a new twist as we focus on the triple bottom line of sustainability: economic, social, & environmental.
The 2013 Pledge:
Sustainability is more than just a buzzword at Denison; it is part of the fabric of who we are and what we value. We strive to make sustainable choices, considering the environmental, economic and social implications of our actions. As part of our community I am committed to do my part in moving Denison towards a more sustainable future. This year, I pledge to do the following:
- I will volunteer at least 10 hours of my time towards community service projects to contribute to social sustainability.
- I will make environmentally conscious food decisions that may include locally-sourced, vegetarian, and/or vegan meals to contribute to environmental sustainability.
- I will make an effort to buy locally grown or produced items and shop at locally owned businesses to contribute to economic sustainability.
- I will visit the Green Revolution Exhibition at the Denison Museum in Spring 2014.
The campus community will be able to sign the pledge at the A-Quad celebration starting at 4:00pm.
In addition to the pledge signing, a number of our student groups and the Office of Sustainability have organized events throughout the day.
Sustainability Wellness Walk – 4:45pm at the Biological Reserve – Meet in the parking lot of the Softball/Baseball Field. The first 25 people to show up get a free DU Sustainability T-Shirt.
Composting Outreach Campaign – All day in the dining halls – Organized by the Denison Green Team
A-Quad Celebration – 4:00pm – 6:00pm – Featuring student groups and local green businesses. Come see what’s going on and come sign the 2013 Campus Sustainability Pledge.
Arbor Day in the Fall – We’ll be planting two trees just south of the flagpole as part of our continued support of the Denison treescape. Planting will take place at 4:30pm.
