FINE/PERFORMING ARTS SUPPLEMENTS

Overview

Admission to Denison University is based on a holistic review of your application. Additional materials that you voluntarily include with your application will only enhance the overall picture we see of you. We focus primarily on your academic history, but we appreciate the insight into your personal high school experience that supplemental information can provide.

Students who are interested in cinema, creative writing, dance, music, studio art, or theatre may wish to submit supplementary arts materials for evaluation. Samples of your work must be submitted to Denison through the Denison Applicant Portal. Submission of supplementary materials is completely optional. If submitted, materials will be reviewed by members of the arts faculty.

ALL SUPPLEMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE APPLICATION DEADLINE – JANUARY 15 FOR REGULAR DECISION APPLICANTS

Creative Writing

Applicants may submit a portfolio of up to 5 poems, up to 15 pages of creative writing, or a combination of the two.

Dance

Applicants may submit a short video portraying the student taking a class, and dancing either in a performance, or for the camera, as if auditioning. We strongly recommend that you visit Denison and participate in a dance class while on campus, as well.  Students planning a visit can contact Beth White to discuss ways to connect with the Department of Dance.

Music

The Department of Music offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships for incoming students. The department requires that applicants wishing to be considered for scholarships have a live audition with a faculty member or submit a recording to the department. Live auditions can be scheduled by contacting Pam Hughes. Students are not required to be music majors or minors in order to be considered for music scholarships.

The Department of Music will host a High School Senior Audition Day on January 16, 2017. The deadline for live auditions in the music department has been extended to January 16 this year to accommodate those who visit for the High School Senior Audition Day.  Recordings will also be accepted in lieu of live auditions, and must be uploaded through the Denison Applicant Portal.

Dance

Applicants may submit a short DVD portraying the student taking a class, and dancing either in a performance or for the camera as if auditioning. We strongly recommend that you visit Denison and participate in a Dance class while on campus as well.

Studio Art

Applicants may submit a PowerPoint presentation with 15-20 images of their artwork from high school including the size, medium, and date of completion for each work. A brief artist statement may be included in the PowerPoint as well.  Please do not send original artwork.

Theatre

Applicants may submit a short video portraying themselves acting either in a performance or for the camera, as if auditioning.
