Participants take part in 35 scientific dives in one of the Earth’s most diverse and pristine marine habitats, collaborate on research projects with local conservation organizations, and complete an independent research project in marine biology or ecology. This is a direct enrollment program that requires independence, resilience, and patience on the part of the student. While multiple housing options are offered, DU students are required to participate in a homestay to facilitate immersion.

What's cool about this program?
35,000 student comprehensive university located in Florianópolis, the “cultural capital” of southern Brazil and a city located partly on the island of Santa Catarina and partly on the mainland. Participants are required to take an intensive language and culture course at the start of the semester, and may continue their language study with an additional 3 cr. semester language course. English-taught electives ranging from 1 to 3 credits focus on Brazilian culture, economics, socioeconomic problems and natural resource management issues. Several housing options are available, however students will have the greatest level of cultural immersion and opportunity to learn Portuguese in a homestay.

Highly experiential, Duke Marine Lab is a unique window on the sea, providing information on the rich environmental mosaic of coastal habitats where land meets sea. Their sense of place encourages wise local land management and protection of our precious natural resources. A great place to study oceans and marine biology: Ocean studies are central to the resolution of global environmental problems related to the impacts of humans on ecological systems, biodiversity, climate change, coastal land management, environmental quality, and environmental health.
