“Understanding Awesome Masks: The Ingredients of an Impressive History”
Patrick McNaughton is the Chancellor’s Professor of Art History and Chair of the Department of the History of Art at Indiana University. He is the author of many articles and books, including The Mande Blacksmiths (1988), about a large group of technologists and artists in West Africa, and A Bird Dance Near Saturday City (2008), which explores the ideas and aesthetics behind a renowned masquerade dancer.
He has received Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Smithsonian Senior Fellowships, and is the Editor of the Indiana University Press Series African Expressive Cultures.
